Fuengirola has not stopped growing since Roman times. Vestiges of the Roman's presence in the town are still preserved in the Finca El Secretario site, while the Sohail Castle, which dominates a hillside next to a river, bears witness to its Muslim past. The town's development has been done sensibly and respecting the environment, as is evidenced by its extensive network of urban parks stretching out across the town. Today, tourists will find a modern city offering all the services they could possibly need (sports facilities, shopping centres, leisure parks, etc.), along with a rich cultural offering, which is always accompanied by the gentle sound of the Mediterranean Sea. Seven beaches along Fuengirola's eight-kilometre coastline have been awarded the prestigious blue flag.
